THE EFFECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY Domestic
Violence does not stay neatly packed away into a single troubled home.
It spills over into our schools, communities, court systems, and work
places. Children miss school. Women miss work. Some women even lose
their jobs due to too many absences. Millions of dollars are lost every year due to domestic violence. This happens not just through lost productivity in the work place, but also through health care costs, court costs, and tax dollars. It also spills over into our own families as a sister or a niece or a daughter or granddaughter or mother or grandmother may find themselves in a violent relationship. Up until now, we’ve always been taught that family problems are a private matter and we need to mind our own business. Today, we’ve learned that violence brings on more violence. Children who grow up in homes where domestic violence is present often grow up to become victims of domestic violence or become perpetrators of violence themselves. We as a community must reach out to troubled families that need our help. As a community, we must work together to end domestic violence. We can all help stop domestic violence in various ways. >Get involved. >Learn to recognize the signs. >Teach our children that violence is wrong. >Educate yourself about the myths and facts surrounding domestic violence. REMEMBER: NO ONE DESERVES TO BE ABUSED!
